NAVITIMER

Navitimer: For the journey

Breitling’s relationship with aviation began with Breitling as supplier of cockpit instruments for the aviation industry. In 1952, Willy Breitling developed a new concept: A chronograph for Aircraft Owners and Pilots Associaton (AOPA) members. At the time AOPA was (and still is) worlds largest pilotclub. The design was innovative! The “instrument” could be worn on the wrist and made it possible for pilots to make necessary calculations during flight. Even the average speed, distance, fuel consumption and take off speed. This was made possible by the round slide rule on the bezel of the watch. It was the first on-board computer. The name, Navitimer, is a combination of the words navigation and timer. After the introduction with the AOPA-members, it was a direct succes!

Not only pilots were attracted to the design of the Navitimer. Also world famous artists like Miles David and Serge Gainsbourg were huge fans. They showed the world that the Navitimer was functional, but also stylish! Sinds its debut 70 years ago, there have been many varieties of this iconic watch.

The Navitimer is Breitling’s most versatile watch. As a chronograph, GMT and classic model; the recognisable slide rule shows on every Navitimer. One of the most recognisable watches ever made! Collectors say this watch belongs on the list of greatest watches of all time. What started as a tool for pilots, is now a much desired wristwatch. The iconic Navitimer look is worldknown.
